Botox Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable liquid drug that stops certain muscles from moving. It does this by blocking the nerve signals telling your muscles to move. Dr. Pham administers the injections with great precision to target specific muscles without rendering others immobile.

The active ingredient in Botox is a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin. It’s produced by a bacterium that you can find in many places in nature, including animal intestines and fish fins.

Botox is the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic treatment available today, known for its ability to alleviate fine lines on your face. However, it also serves several other clinical purposes.

What does Botox do?

Many people know Botox as a wrinkle treatment, but it only specializes in one kind of wrinkle. While it can’t tighten large folds of skin, it can reduce the muscle activity and stiffness that leads to facial wrinkles called dynamic wrinkles, which deepen the more you move and make expressions. A few that Botox can treat are:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines
  • Forehead lines

Aside from these cosmetic uses, Botox injections can also treat:

  • Eyelid spasms
  • Crossed eyes
  • Lazy eye

If you have a condition that's treatable with Botox, Dr. Pham may recommend it to you and tell you more about how it works.

What can I expect during the Botox procedure?

When you come to Dr. Pham’s office for Botox injections, he may offer you a topical numbing cream for your skin. This isn’t always necessary, but it makes patients feel more comfortable and at ease as they’re about to get the injections. Yet, Botox injections are generally tolerable because the needles are very thin.

Dr. Pham uses thin needles to deliver tiny doses of Botox to a specific area. You’ll likely need several injections near your treatment area to reach your goal. He advises you not to rub your skin near the injection site for at least 24 hours to keep the drug in the right place. One to three days later, you’ll finally see and feel the effects of your injections. The results last for four months on average.
